Introduction to a Math Majoring Gamer

(Personal Image from cellphone)

Hey everyone, my name is Jacob, and I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma, majoring in mathematics. I'll say this, the major is not for the faint of heart. Upper level math courses are pretty difficult! But that's enough about school, I'll tell you a bit about myself. I am twenty-one years old and am currently dating my girlfriend of almost 5 years, Rachel. We have plans to move in together next summer and are working towards that goal. My hobbies include video games, playing soccer, and planning. By planning I mean organizing events and recruiting teams for local leagues. This fall, I recruited two teams to play in OKLCS (Oklahoma League Championship Series), which is an Oklahoma organization that hosts competitive play between teams in League of Legends. I love playing soccer competitively, and can't really play for recreation or I get too competitive. I have five pets, two dogs and three cats. Really only two of them are "mine" (Tinkerbell, a black lab, and Sherlocke, an almost full blood Russian Blue). The other three are Sadie (a Dachshund), T (A mixed cat) and Poly (A poly-dactyl tabby). For those who don't know, poly-dactyl cats are born with an extra dewclaw on their feet, so Poly has twenty-four toes instead of twenty!

For the long term I would say my goals are all aimed at happiness in life. These include getting a career that I enjoy, at least to some extent, marrying Rachel within the next few years, buying a house together that we can decorate, and having children a little while after. That is, once we've enjoyed being free adults for a bit! I just want to be happy in life, and not have to worry about money or be stressed. For me, these are all the things I need to that end.

  1. Aha, Jacob, another math major (do you know Nick?)... and I am guessing I might run into a few more math folks as I go through the Intros. I started out as a math major in college, but then I took Russian (which they recommended as the foreign language for math majors), and I was hooked: no looking back; I dropped my math major and switched to foreign languages. And how cool that you have a polydactyl cat! That might make her worthy of being a character in a story that you write for this class ha ha. And I totally agree about not worrying about money or being stressed in general, so I hope this class can be totally low-stress, especially if you have some intense math classes this semester. Stories are to be enjoyed IMO, not stressed about! :-)

  2. I so admire you for being a math major! There is absolutely no way I could do that, even though I used to be good in math back in my teens! I'm putting off the require business calculus class I need for my major until the very end because I know it's going to kick my butt. I have the same goal in life: to be happy and not worry about money or stress, but I'm 46 and haven't gotten there yet. Some day though...

  3. Hey Jacob. Having a math major sounds like it's super hard because I took only two math classes at OU and it was stressful enough. It's pretty cool that you plan events for League of Legends. One of my friends made me play that game and it was too tough for me. There is way too much strategy that goes into it. I'm more of a NBA 2K guy because it just takes a lot less skill to play!

  4. Hi Jacob, it's nice to meet you! I think it's so sweet that you and your girlfriend have been together for so long, it is difficult to find a relationship nowadays that lasts longer than a year. It's exciting that you already have plans to marry her! I wish you guys the best.

I also like that you have so many pets! I grew up around animals my whole life so seeing other animal-lovers always makes me happy; animals are the best company. Have a great rest of your semester!

  5. Hey Jacob, I’ve gone deep enough into math myself to know that your major is definitely not for the faint at heart, and I stopped at Diff Eq ha ha. I will say though, that I have always been fascinated by the really high level theoretical math. While I don’t understand much of it, I think the problems that are being approached are really intriguing.

  6. Hi Jacob! I actually don't know that I've ever met a math major before, very cool for you! What kind of stuff do you want to do with that? Is there something that you had in mind when you chose the major or do you just know that you enjoy math? Either way, you're right about it not being for the faint of heart. I love math up until a certain point and then it's just a little too confusing for me. Congrats on being with your girlfriend for 5 years! That's really incredible. Nice to meet you!

  7. Hello Jacob, my name is Devin and I am a chemical engineer so I understand how hard those math classes can get with all the upper division level math classes! I also love to play soccer too! I've played soccer throughout a lot of my life up to college where I quit because I don't have as much time as I use to. Hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  8. Hey Jacob!
As a Journalsim major I would agree that your major is not for the faint of heart. I take a very smart person to do what you are doing, so congrats! Well done on your recruiting efforts and cheers to your relationship of five years! I certainly wish you the best of luck in finding happiness and that is something I am sure we all strive for.

  9. Hey Jacob! I think that a Math Major is awesome. I've always loved math, and I'm also thinking of maybe getting a minor in it, but I'm still deciding. That's awesome that you recruited for OKLCS. I've played for a couple teams in the OKLCS a few seasons back (Weiner1 and Pigs might Fly). Are you currently playing in the OKLCS? You should think about playing for the OU League of Legends team. I'm currently playing for the Junior Varsity team here at OU for League of Legends. Maybe I'll see you sometime.

  10. Hey Jacob!
I think a mathematics major would definitely appreciate the complex nature of a game like League of Legends or even perhaps Starcraft. I've played League since season 3 I think and boy does it test my patience. I think it's one of those games that you need to take a break from every once in awhile, or at least it is for me haha. I like your life goals, and I have to say they reflect my own pretty closely. You seem like a relaxed guy and a simple man which I can appreciate. Best of luck this semester!

  11. Hey Jacob!
As soon as I got to your introduction and saw the picture of you and your girlfriend I had to show it to my boyfriend. It is a really precious picture. I hear you on upper level math classes being difficult. I have a friend that was just getting a math minor and the math classes she took blew my mind, and I am not unfamiliar with math, being an engineering student. I really loved hearing about your goals in life. They are really similar to mine, and it is nice to hear that other people also are shooting for happiness. My boyfriend and I are also starting to plan those sorts of things since we will both be finishing our masters degrees next December. Good luck with your classes and all of your pets!

  12. Hi Jacob, good luck on those math classes, I can imagine that they are very time consuming. What kind of games do you play? I'm guessing that you play some league of legends as you recruit for that league? I've tried getting into LOL but it really just isn't my thing. Anyway, good luck with your future plans! You seem to really know what you want, which is more than most of us 21 year olds, haha.

  13. Hi Jacob! Majoring in math does not seem like something I would want to do, I was excited to end my math classes sophomore year. I love pets but I don't know if I could handle 5! I have one dog and she is a handful in herself. Good luck with all your plans for the future, I am sure you will accomplish them all!

  14. Hey Jacob! I took a few upper level calc classes my freshman year, and you’re right when you say that it’s not for the faint of heart! Math is not my thing, but I know how hard it is so I’m impressed that you’re majoring in it. It’s super cute that you and your girlfriend have dated for so long, and I wish y’all the best. The matching pajamas are amazing.

  15. Hi Jacob,
I too am a senior here. I can't believe we are almost done. I like your future goals and aspirations. I too am hoping to get a job where I can become financially stable and enjoy being a young adult. I think it is so important to find a career/job that you actually enjoy, because that is what we will be spending a lot of our adult life doing. Best of luck!

  16. Hey Jacob,
I know how difficult the upper level math classes are and I gotta commend you on sticking it out and succeeding in the classes that gave you (or are giving you) trouble. I never knew there was a league that is centered on gaming, I looking up the organization as we speak because I might have heard about it before but did not think it would be the same organization. What system do you have? I am interested in knowing what your favorite games are. Good Luck in your future endeavors.

  17. Hey Jacob! I would not have said this years ago, but I think it is so cool to major in math! I sometimes wish I majored in math because of the flexibility I would have applying mathematical analysis to whatever field I was interested in. I love that your goal is to maximize the happiness in your life and I hope that leads you to do something that you love instead of doing something that you don't feel fulfilled doing just so can have the means to do what you love.

  18. Hey Jacob! I think being a math major is so admirable! I am terrible at math and have struggled with it for as long as I can remember. Congrats on being a senior and being so close to graduating, that's s exciting! I look forward to reading your stories. It was nice to meet you! Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  19. Hey there Jacob! It's sweet to read about your aspirations with your significant other. Most people at our age don't look into love with that much passion or commitment, so I think that's really cool. I'm glad you have great hobbies going for you to so that you're breaking up some of those difficult tasks from your math course work! What types of jobs are you hoping to get post grad with that degree? I wish you nothing but success and happiness in your future! Good luck this semester.

  20. Hi, Jacob! First off, I think it is really nice of you to write about your goals with your girlfriend! Not many people do that! Also, I think it is really cool that you are a math major! I absolutely hate math and I am not good at it at all, so I am always amazed when I meet people who can actually do math and are good at it. Congrats on being a senior! I am a senior too and I am definitely ready for graduation! I hope you have a good rest of the semester!

  21. Hey Jacob! Your major is very fascinating to me because I could never do that. I also enjoy playing soccer and I do get too into it as well. I think it is important to have a rough life plan like you do because honestly I am just existing and I don't know where I am headed. Hopefully things pan out though. I am very excited to read though your blogs and get to know you better through stories!

  22. Hey Jacob! I agree that being a math major isn't for the faint of heart. I remember my Calc TA once telling stories about how difficult problems can be even for graduate students. I'm glad it's not my major, that's for sure! I'm also the same as you when it comes to being competitive, I'm that way with just about everything I do because I absolutely hate losing, even for small things. Being a senior must be super exciting, good luck finishing up your final year!

  23. Hey Jacob!

Wow a math major.. Brave! You and your girlfriend are incredibly cute and that is quite a long time. I am rooting for the both of you. I also think that is really cool about your cat. I did not know that so I thought it was really fascinating. I also love event planning, that is something we both have in common. unfortunately I do not get to do it often but I think it is really cool what you do!

  24. Hey Jacob!
I'm impressed that you are majoring in math! What do you plan on doing after school? I would imagine that there are may job opportunities for somebody with that type of degree.
I noticed that you said you had a poly-dactyl cat. I also had one and remembered his claws getting caught often. My mom actually currently has a poly-dactyl cat named Rowdy and he's the goodest boy ever.
Anyway, congrats on finishing this semester strong and only one more until graduation!

  25. Hey Jacob, I think it is really cool that you are a math major! Math can definitely be hard and I am sure that it takes much determination. Once I got to calculus, everything became a blur because all the concepts were kind of difficult to me. It is also cool that you like soccer. I played in high school and it was pretty fun!

  26. Hey Jacob,
It is really cool that you are a math major. I used to think I was good at math, but then I came to college. I bet that there are so many different avenues you are going to be able to take after you graduate. I bet it is exciting being so close to graduating. Good luck with your future!

  27. Hi Jacob! I understand! Math is difficult and upper-division ones must be really challenging! It’s amazing that you’ve dated your girlfriend for 5 years. I can’t recall dating someone that long. I like League of Legends too! I’m from Korea and it’s really big over there. I think your goals are amazing and I think you’ll achieve all of them. It’s nice to meet you Jacob!
